A well-made cover is the first thing a buyer touches, and for hardcover and special-edition books the material and finish choices matter as much as the artwork itself. This guide walks through the cover materials and decorative finishes we produce most often for overseas publishers, and the file requirements that keep your project on schedule.

Cover Material Options

For hardcover (case-bound) books, the cover starts with greyboard β€” a rigid recycled board, typically 2mm to 3mm thick for most trade books β€” which is then wrapped in a covering material. Your choice of wrap defines the look, feel, and price of the book.

Printed Paper over Greyboard

The most common option. Your cover artwork is printed (usually on 128gsm–157gsm art paper), laminated, and wrapped around the board. This gives you full-color freedom β€” photography, illustration, complex graphics β€” at the lowest cost per unit. It is the standard choice for trade hardcovers, children's books, and photo books.

Book Cloth

Woven fabric (usually cotton or rayon-based) in a wide range of colors and textures. Cloth covers are traditionally paired with foil stamping rather than full-color printing, giving a classic library or fine-press look. Ideal for Bibles, academic volumes, and commemorative editions.

PU Leather (Imitation Leather)

A synthetic material that mimics leather grain at a fraction of the cost. It takes foil stamping and debossing well, is durable, and is the usual choice for Bibles, journals, and gift editions where a leather look is wanted on a production budget. Colors and grain patterns vary widely, so ask for a material swatch before committing.

Genuine Leather

The premium option, used for deluxe Bibles, heirloom editions, and limited runs. Genuine leather varies from hide to hide and requires experienced handling during casing-in. Expect a meaningfully higher unit cost and longer lead time, and confirm the leather source and tanning type with your printer.

Decorative Finishes Explained

Foil Stamping

A heated metal die presses a thin foil film onto the cover, leaving a crisp metallic or pigmented impression. Gold and silver are the classics, but copper, rose gold, holographic, and matte color foils are also widely available. Foil works on cloth, PU, leather, and laminated paper. Keep foil-stamped type reasonably bold β€” very fine lines and small serif fonts can fill in or break up.

Embossing and Debossing

Embossing raises the design above the surface; debossing presses it in. Both use matched metal dies. Blind embossing/debossing (no ink or foil) creates a subtle, tactile effect popular on cloth and leather covers. Debossing combined with foil stamping β€” foil set into a recessed area β€” is a standard treatment for Bible and journal covers.

Spot UV

A clear high-gloss coating applied to selected areas over a matte laminated background. The contrast between matte and gloss makes logos, titles, or patterns catch the light without any additional color. Spot UV is used on printed paper covers and dust jackets, not on cloth or leather.

Lamination: Gloss, Matte, and Soft-Touch

Nearly every printed paper cover gets a lamination film for scuff resistance and durability:

  • Gloss lamination β€” shiny, makes colors vivid; common on children's and mass-market books.
  • Matte lamination β€” non-reflective, understated; the current preference for literary and gift titles.
  • Soft-touch lamination β€” a matte film with a velvet-like feel; more expensive and can show fingerprints, but very effective for premium editions.

Gilded Edges

The trimmed edges of the text block are coated with metallic foil (gold or silver) or colored ink. Gilding also protects the page edges from dust β€” one reason it remains standard on Bibles and devotional books.

Ribbon Markers and Head/Tail Bands

A ribbon marker is a woven satin ribbon glued into the spine as a built-in bookmark; books can carry one, two, or more ribbons in matching or contrasting colors. Head and tail bands are the small striped fabric strips at the top and bottom of the spine β€” partly decorative, partly a traditional sign of quality case binding. Both are inexpensive upgrades that noticeably raise perceived value.

Dust Jackets

A dust jacket is a removable printed wrapper (typically 157gsm–200gsm art paper, laminated) folded around a hardcover. It gives you the best of both worlds: full-color marketing artwork on the jacket, with a durable cloth or PU cover underneath that can carry its own foil-stamped title. Jackets also carry flaps for author bios, blurbs, and pricing. If you plan a dust jacket, tell your printer early β€” the jacket width depends on the finished spine and board thickness, and flap widths (commonly 70mm–100mm) should be confirmed with the template.

File Preparation Requirements

Cover files are where most delays happen. Getting these points right before you send artwork saves days of back-and-forth:

  • Color mode: CMYK only. Offset presses print in cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. RGB files will be converted, and bright screen colors (especially blues, greens, and oranges) can shift noticeably. Convert to CMYK in your design software and check the result.
  • Bleed: 3mm on all sides. Extend background images and colors 3mm beyond the trim line so trimming tolerances never leave white edges. Keep critical text at least 5mm inside the trim line.
  • Hardcover wrap margin. For case covers, the artwork must extend roughly 15mm–20mm past the board edges to wrap around the greyboard β€” your printer's template will show the exact wrap, hinge, and gutter zones.
  • Spine width depends on page count and paper bulk. Spine width = (page count Γ· 2) Γ— sheet thickness, plus board allowance for hardcovers. Because different papers of the same gsm bulk differently, never finalize spine art until your printer confirms the exact width for your chosen paper and final page count. A spine designed 1mm too narrow or wide will visibly misalign.
  • Resolution and format. Images at 300 dpi at final size, fonts embedded or outlined, supplied as print-ready PDF.
  • Foil and embossing layers. Supply foil-stamped or embossed elements as separate spot-color layers (100% black in a named spot channel works) on their own PDF page, clearly labeled.

Proofing Before Production

Never skip proofing on a cover with special finishes β€” dies and foils behave differently from ink on paper.

  • Digital proofs (PDF or printed) confirm layout, color, and spine width quickly and cheaply.
  • Physical proofs / dummy copies let you check the actual material, lamination, and binding feel. For foil stamping and embossing, we recommend approving a physical sample of the finished effect on your chosen cover material before mass production.
  • Color-critical projects can request a wet proof or machine proof on the actual paper stock, at additional cost and time.
