Book Packaging Best Practices for Export Shipping

Good export packaging is the cheapest insurance on a book shipment: a few extra cents per carton protects months of production work on a weeks-long ocean journey. Here is how we pack books for sea freight, and what you should specify when ordering printing from China.
Why Packaging Matters So Much in Sea Freight
Books are unusually vulnerable cargo. Paper is hygroscopic β it absorbs and releases moisture with the air around it β and a book that takes on too much moisture will warp, grow mildew, or stick its pages together. Sea freight exposes a shipment to three main hazards:
- Humidity and "container rain." A container crossing climate zones heats up by day and cools at night. When the air inside drops below its dew point, moisture condenses on the container walls and ceiling and drips onto the cargo. This can happen even in a perfectly sealed container, because the moisture comes from the cargo, the pallets, and the air itself.
- Physical handling. A typical export carton is lifted, stacked, and occasionally dropped several times between our factory floor and your warehouse. Books are dense and heavy, so weak cartons split at the corners and seams.
- Stacking pressure. Cartons at the bottom of a pallet, and pallets low in a container stack, carry hundreds of kilograms for weeks. Cartons must survive compression, not just drops.
Shrink-Wrapping: The First Line of Defense
Before any carton is packed, books or small bundles should be sealed in plastic. Shrink-wrapping is the standard method, and we recommend specifying it for any shipment traveling by sea.
- Per book is the safest option and the usual choice for hardcovers, art books, and retail-bound titles. Each book arrives shelf-ready and protected even if a carton is damaged.
- Per bundle (typically 5β10 copies, depending on trim size and page count) costs less and uses less plastic. It is common for textbooks and titles going straight to a distributor for repacking.
Either way, the wrap keeps out moisture during handling and gives the paper a buffer against humidity swings inside the container.
Carton Specifications
The export carton does the heavy lifting. For books, we recommend this baseline:
- Double-wall corrugated board. Single-wall cartons are fine for domestic delivery; for export, specify double-wall (five-ply) corrugated with a solid edge-crush and burst rating. It resists stacking compression and survives rough port handling far better.
- Weight per carton: 15β20 kg maximum. Cartons will be manually lifted at several points in the chain, and books are dense β it is easy to accidentally pack a 30 kg carton. Staying in the 15β20 kg range protects workers, reduces dropped-carton damage, and aligns with typical manual-handling guidance. Exact limits vary by destination and customer, so confirm if your buyer has its own standard.
- Strong sealing. Seal all seams with packing tape β an H-tape pattern on top and bottom is common β and strap or band heavy cartons.
- No wasted space. Books should fit snugly. Empty space lets books shift and slam against the walls on every handling event, crushing corners and spines.
Palletizing and ISPM-15 Pallets
Cartons should travel on pallets, not loose on the container floor. Palletizing speeds loading, keeps cartons off a possibly damp floor, and enables mechanical handling at both ends.
ISPM-15 Is Not Optional
Wooden pallets and other solid wood packaging used in international trade must comply with ISPM-15, the phytosanitary standard enforced in most importing countries. It requires the wood to be heat-treated to a core temperature of at least 56Β°C for a minimum of 30 continuous minutes (or fumigated where permitted), and each compliant pallet carries the IPPC mark showing the country code, producer number, and treatment code (HT for heat treatment). Customs inspectors check for this mark; non-compliant wood packaging can get a shipment rejected, fumigated at your expense, or destroyed. We use heat-treated, ISPM-15-marked pallets for export as standard practice. Plastic or presswood pallets are an exempt alternative.
How the Pallet Is Built
- Cartons are stacked in an interlocking or column pattern, aligned to the pallet edges with no overhang β overhanging cartons crush and tear.
- The full pallet is wrapped in stretch film, with corner protectors under strapping on heavy loads.
- For sensitive shipments, add a moisture barrier: a plastic sheet under the cartons or a full shrink hood over the pallet.
Container Loading Patterns
- Load tight, wall to wall. Pallets should fit snugly with minimal gaps. Empty gaps allow movement, and a load that shifts at sea can collapse.
- Weight distributed evenly. Books are among the densest cargo shipped β a 20-foot container often reaches its weight limit well before it looks full. Never assume volume is the constraint.
- Brace the door area. The last pallets in should be braced with airbags, timber, or strapping so nothing leans against the doors β a safety hazard when the container is opened at destination.
- FCL vs. LCL. A full container load (FCL) stays sealed from origin to destination. Less-than-container-load (LCL) cargo is consolidated and deconsolidated at warehouses, adding handling steps β for LCL, palletizing and strong stretch-wrapping matter even more.
Desiccants and Moisture Protection
Because container rain is driven by moisture already inside the container, the practical defenses are:
- Container desiccants. Calcium chloride or similar desiccant bags and strips hung from the container lashing rings absorb moisture from the air and lower the dew point inside. The quantity needed depends on container size, voyage length, and cargo moisture content; suppliers provide calculation guides.
- Dry materials. Wood pallets and corrugated board themselves carry moisture, so packing materials should be stored dry before loading.
- Shrink-wrapped books, as noted above, are the last barrier if condensation does occur.
- Container inspection. Before loading, check for holes, door-seal integrity, and a clean, dry floor β a container that took on water on a previous voyage can undo all other precautions.
Labeling and Shipping Marks
Clear marks prevent loss, misrouting, and customs delays. Every export carton should carry:
- Shipping marks agreed with the buyer: typically the consignee name or code, purchase order or title reference, destination port, and carton number in the format "Carton X of Y."
- Gross and net weight and carton dimensions, which your forwarder and customs broker need for documentation.
- Handling marks: "Keep Dry" is essential for books; "This Side Up" and stacking limits are also common.
- Country of origin ("Made in China"), required by most destination markets.
Marks must match the packing list exactly β mismatches between physical cartons and paperwork are a classic cause of customs holds. Share your marking requirements with us before packing begins, and we will apply them as cartons are sealed.
Getting It Right From the Start
Export packaging is far easier to specify before production than to fix after. When you request a quote, tell us your destination, whether you need FCL or LCL, any carton weight limits your market requires, and your preferred packing format.
